Q I’ve heard that full fairings are too heavy to be easily detached
and attached. How heavy is a Dead Center fairing?
A This is simply not true. A person that is physically capable of safely
riding a large motorcycle is typically able to attach/detach a Dead Center fairing with stereo quite easily.
The fairing, although large in appearance, is made of relatively light and strong fiberglass. The weight
of the overall fairing as shipped, with brackets, windshield and stereo system is less than 25 lbs.
Attaching and removing a fairing of this weight does not pose a problem for typical customers.
Q Will I have any handlebar clearance problems with a Dead Center fairing?
A Stock handlebars: Your handlebars may need to be rotated back slightly
depending on how far forward your bars are currently positioned.
When viewed from the side, if the slope of the handlebars is in line with the angle of the front forks or back
there will not be a clearance problem. The closest interference point is with the fitting for the brake line on
the right handlebar. Rotating this assembly slightly may also increase clearance.
Aftermarket handlebars: Most aftermarket handlebars have more "pull back" than the stock bars, positioning the
handgrips closer to the rider. These will typically have no clearance issues. Wild One Chubby Road King and
Road King II bars, for example, work very well. Some flat, or nearly straight across handlebars may have an
interference problem with a Dead Center fairing due to the fact that they place the grips, switchgear and
brake master cylinder further forward. We have also fitted our fairings to motorcyles with "ape" style bars of 13"
rise and higher without clearance problems.
Q What is your return policy in case I find that I do have a clearance problem
with my aftermarket handlebars, or I feel it is too awkward for me to attach and detach, or I wish to return the
fairing for some other reason?
A Returns will be accepted for full refund of the purchase price and applicable sales
tax for 30 days after purchase date when accompanied by a copy of the original invoice according to the terms of
our return policy. Please read our return policy for full details.
Q What is the windshield height?
A The Dead Center fairing utilizes a standard '96+ FLHT 9" tall windshield as standard. The overall
height is about the same as the standard Road King windshield.
Q What is the procedure for attaching a Dead Center fairing to the bike?
A Align the middle of the rear facing edge of the stainless steel guide brackets (patent pending)
against the front facing edge of the upper windshield mounts on the motorcycle. Carefully lower the fairing until the upper
windshield mounts begin to enter the slotted upper portion of the brackets. The lower slotted portion of the brackets will
now begin to engage the lower windshield mounts, finding there way into place by "feel" due to the large opening. As the
fairing is lowered fully into place you should hear a "click" from the lockable push-button latch indicating that the
fairing is fully seated and latched in place. Pull up slightly on the fairing to feel for resistance ensuring that it
is latched properly. Optionally, the customer my insert one of the supplied keys (2 duplicate keys are included) in the
lockable push-button latch and turn it to lock the fairing on the bike.
Q What is the procedure for detaching a Dead Center fairing from the bike?
A If locked, unlock by inserting one of the supplied keys (2 duplicate keys are included)
into the lockable push-button latch and turning. Disconnect the electrical connectors between the fairing and motorcycle.
Depress push-button latch with your left hand while simultaneously lifting up slightly on the fairing from
below the stereo cover area with your right hand. The fairing must be raised approximately ¼" for the mechanism to clear
the latch. Then, using both hands continue to lift the fairing up and forward to clear the motorcycle.
Q Won’t I lose my station presets on my stereo when I unplug it and remove the fairing?
A Yes.
Q Aren't there problems with CD's skipping either from engine vibration at idle or when riding
down the road?
A This is a problem with some of our competitors, but not for us. We use a Jensen stereo with Electronic Shock Protection which virtually eliminates skipping, so no, there are no skipping problems with our fairing. We have not been able to get it to skip under any riding conditions thus far.
Q How is the Dead Center Fairing wiring harness installed on the bike?
A Detailed instructions with photos are included with your fairing. Here is a brief summary to
give you an idea of what is involved.
Road King models: First, remove the seat and dash. Connect the 2 wire nuts at the end of the wiring harness to
the positive and negative terminals of the battery. Run the wiring harness up over the fuel tank underneath the dash area.
Ignition on/accessory on power is obtained from the main power switch in the dash. Using the provided wire-tap, connect the
3rd wire from the wiring harness to the wire under the switch that is powered when the switch is in IGN ON and ACC ON positions.
Install mounting clip on right forward portion of the frame utilizing an existing screw that holds a J-strap there. Slip
connector from the wiring harness onto the mounting clip. Reinstall dash and seat.
Softail models: Unlike Road King models, the stock Softail dash does not extend all the way to the seat. Instead
there is a black plastic cover between the seat and the dash. This cover is not thick enough to cover the Dead Center
Fairing wiring harness and will not sit flush to the fuel tank with the Dead Center Fairing wiring harness beneath it.
The easiest solution is to replace the black plastic cover with a “Chrome Dash Panel Extension for Softail Models” which
fits ’00-later Softail models and is available from your dealer (part number 71283-01). Currently the retail price for
this is $39.95. This extension is thick enough to hide the wiring harness and will sit flush to the tank with the wiring
harness hidden beneath it. When utilized, the wiring harness installation procedure is essentially the same as on Road King
models, described above. If not utilized, your other option is to run the wiring harness underneath the fuel tank by
utilizing a stiff piece of wire to push it through or by removing the tank.
Q Does the Dead Center Fairing need to be painted?
A Our fairings have the same finish as the outside of a typical new fiberglass boat or similar
fiberglass product. The short answer is that the finish is a glossy black gel-coat and does not require paint. See our
photo gallery for images of the unpainted fairing.
That said, our polyurethane paint with clear coat is tougher, more scratch resistant, and longer lasting than any gel-coat finish can be. Our customers generally have at least the front facing outer portion of the fairing painted to match the paint color
of their bike. Some with black paint choose not to do so as it is a pretty close match to the factory black color and at
a glance people don't typically realize it's unpainted. But you should be aware that upon close inspection you can see
that the gel-coat finish is not as deep looking as our polyurethane paint job with clear coat which is wet-sanded and
polished to a deep luster.
We recommend that our fairings be painted, both inner and outer, for optimum appearance and longevity.
Q Will fairing mounted rear-view mirrors work with the Dead Center Fairing?
A Short answer: They will work, but require some slight modification.
Long answer: The speakers on the Dead Center Fairing are larger than on the Electra Glide or Ultra Classic, so when you
mount the mirrors designed for those fairings on ours they must be mounted further out toward the outside edges. The
mirrors have a range of adjustment and we have found that they needed to be turned all the way in and even so they barely
allowed for a view directly behind. Depending on the rider you might find different results – better, or worse. This
can be fixed by sanding down the inside of the plastic mirror mount so that it tips inwards more. So you should be aware
that it would likely take some work before you were happy with it. Also, keep in mind that in this case if you remove
the fairing you’ll be losing your mirrors as well.
Q Can I play my IPOD through the Jensen stereo that comes with the fairing? What about other
MP3 players or audio devices?
A Yes you can play your IPOD or other MP3 player through the fairing stereo. It has an AUX input mounted in the fairing which makes it easy to connect a wide range of external devices such as an IPOD or other MP3 player
by connecting one end of a mini-jack cable to the front of the unit and the other end to your MP3 player. If your MP3 player has a cigarette lighter style power plug and you get the 12V power socket option on our fairing then you also have the ability to easily keep your MP3 player charged when you're out on the road.
